State Aid

Texas Grant 

The purpose of the TEXAS Grant Program is to provide grants of money to enable eligible students to attend public institutions of higher education in this state.

The requirements for the initial year award of the Texas Grant are:

  • Be enrolled as
    • An entering undergraduate student who
      • graduated from an accredited public or private high school in Texas;
      • completed the Recommended or Distinguished Achievement high school program (or its equivalent); and
      • enrolled at least 3/4-time in an undergraduate degree or certificate program at an approved institution within 16-months from high school graduation having not accumulated more than 30 SCH's (excluding credits for dual or concurrent enrollment, or by examination); OR
    • An entering undergraduate student who
      • earned an associate's degree from a public or private nonprofit institution of higher education in Texas, and
      • enrolled at least 3/4-time in an eligible institution within 12 months after receiving the associate's degree
  • Be registered with Selective Service, or be exempt
  • Show financial need (see the award amount section above)
  • Maintain satisfactory academic progress
  • Be classified by the institution as a Texas resident
  • Have not been convicted of a felony or crime involving a controlled substance.

The academic requirements for continuing in the program are: At the end of the first year, the student must meet the school's Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) requirements. At the end of the second year, the student must complete at least 75 percent of the hours attempted in the prior academic year and have an overall college grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.

Texas Educational Opportunity Grant (TEOG)

The Texas Educational Opportunity Grant was designed to provide grant aid to financially needy students enrolled in Texas public two-year colleges.

 

The requirements for the initial year award of the TEOG Grant are:

 

  • Be a Texas resident;
  • Show financial need;
  • If applying for a first-time award, have a family contribution of no more than $2,000;
  • Register for the Selective Service or are exempt from this requirement;
  • Are enrolled at least 1/2 time (6 semester credit hours) in the first 30 hours (or their equivalent) in an associate's degree or certificate program at a public two-year college in Texas;
  • Have not been granted an associate's or a baccalaureate degree; and
  • Have not been convicted of a felony or a crime involving a controlled substance.

 

Students who continue in college and who meet program academic standards can receive awards for up to 75 semester credit hours, for four years, or until they receive an associate's degree, whichever comes first. The academic requirements for continuing in the program are: At the end of the first year, the student must meet the school's Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) requirements. At the end of the second year, the student must complete at least 75 percent of the hours attempted in the prior academic year and have an overall college grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.

Top 10 Percent Scholarship 

The purpose of the Top 10 Percent Scholarship is to provide and the exemption of tuition and fees up to $2,000 to financially needy students who are academically prepared to handle college-level coursework.  An eligible student must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a Texas resident;
  • Rank in the top 10 percent of their high school graduating class at the end of the seventh semester;
  • Demonstrate financial need as evidenced by filing the current year Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form;
  • Have an unmet financial need when using the formula “Cost of Attendance minus Estimated Family Contribution minus Pell Grants”; 
  • Enroll in an institution of higher education in Texas the fall semester immediately following high school graduation;
  • Enroll in a minimum of 12 credit hours (full-time), unless granted a hardship waiver.
The Top 10 Percent Scholarship is renewable and transferable for up to 4 years, if the student remains eligible and continues to meet all program requirements.  To continue in the program a student must:
  • Complete at least 75% of the hours attempted in their most recent 12 month academic year;
  • Complete at least 30 semester credit hours in their most recent 12 month academic year;
  • Maintain an overall grade-point average of 3.25 on a 4.0 scale;
  • Complete a certificate program within 50 credit hours or an associate degree within 105 credit hours. 
In the event of a hardship or for other good cause, the Top Ten Percent Scholarship Coordinator at SPC may allow an otherwise eligible person to receive a Top Ten Percent Scholarship while enrolled for an equivalent of less than full-time or if the student’s grade point average or completion rate or number of completed hours falls below the satisfactory academic progress requirements of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board or South Plains College.   Such conditions are not limited to, but include:
  • a showing of a severe illness or other debilitating condition that may affect the student’s academic performance;
  • an indication that the student is responsible for the care of a sick, injured, or needy person that the student’s provision of care may affect his or her academic performance; or
  • the requirement of fewer than 12 hours to complete one’s degree plan.

 

Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA)

Non-U.S. citizens may be eligible if the Office of Admissions and Records determines that the student is a Texas resident.  Non-U.S. citizens should contact the Office of Financial Aid and complete the Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA) in lieu of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form.
 
 

Texas Public Education Grant (TPEG)

 
The TPEG program is funded through tuition payments and is available for Texas residents and non-U.S. citizens who meet Texas state residency requirements with established financial need.  The TPEG grant is primarily given during the Summer sessions.  Qualifying students should have completed the FAFSA form (for U.S. citizens) and TASFA form (for non-U.S. citizens).  No other application for TPEG is required.  Students must also meet Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements to receive this grant. 
 

Clinical Preceptors Exemption

The purpose of this program is to provide partial exemptions from the payment of tuition to eligible persons employed as clinical preceptors and to their children in order to encourage the preceptors to continue their employment and induce others to seek such employment in the state of Texas. Eligible students shall be exempt from the payment of up to $500 tuition per term.

Interested students should visit www.collegefortexans.com for an application. Students applying for the exemption should provide the Financial Aid Office with the Clinical Preceptor exemption application and a copy of the Clinical Preceptor Agreement. Students must submit a new application every semester. The Clinical Preceptor Agreement only has to be submitted one time. After eligible students have registered for classes, they should notify the Financial Aid Office immediately if they wish to use their exemption for that semester.

To receive this exemption, a preceptor must:

  • Be a resident of Texas.
  • Be a registered nurse.
  • Be serving under a written preceptor agreement for the term in which the exemption is sought.   

To receive this exemption, a student must: 

  • Be a resident of Texas.
  • Be the child of a clinical preceptor, who is serving under a written preceptor agreement for the term in which the exemption is sought.   

Eligibility for this program ends when the student has: 

  • Received exemptions under this program for 10 semesters or summer sessions at any institution higher education.
  • Received a baccalaureate degree.

Award :     up to  $500 per semester

 

Children of Professional Nurse Faculty and Staff Exemption

The purpose of this program is to provide exemptions from the payment of tuition to eligible students to encourage their parents to continue employment as professional nurse faculty or staff members in the state of Texas. Eligible students shall be exempt from the payment of tuition. Interested students should visit www.collegefortexans.com for an application.

Students applying for the exemption should provide the Financial Aid Office with the Professional Nurse Faculty and Staff Exemption application and a letter from the SPC Human Resources Office verifying current employment. Students must submit a new application every semester. The employment letter from Human Resources only has to be done once every academic year. After eligible students have registered for classes, they should notify the Financial Aid Office immediately if they wish to use their exemption for that semester.

To receive this exemption, a student must: 
  • Be a resident of Texas.
  • Have not been granted a baccalaureate degree.
  • Be enrolled in an institution that offers an undergraduate or graduate program in professional nursing.
  • Be the child of an individual who holds a baccalaureate, masters or doctoral degree in nursing. 
  • Be enrolled at the same institution at which their parent is currently employed or contracted with as a nursing faculty or staff member. 

Eligibility for this program ends when the student has: 

    • Received exemptions under this program for 10 semesters or summer sessions.
    • Received a baccalaureate degree.
